Fire Risk Reduction Community

San Miguel Fire Rescue is committed to protecting our community and strengthening wildfire resilience.

Over the past 25 years, devastating wildfires have driven up insurance costs statewide, leaving many homeowners and businesses facing higher premiums, policy cancellations, or difficulty obtaining coverage.

San Miguel Fire Rescue has taken proactive steps in reducing the threat of wildfire by improving preparedness through local planning, public education and wildfire mitigation efforts. As a result, San Miguel Fire Rescue has been officially recognized by the California Board of Forestry as a Fire Risk Reduction Community.

What is the Fire Risk Reduction Community List (FRRCL)?
Public Resources Code 4290.1 requires the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection to develop and maintain “a list of local agencies located in a state responsibility area or very high fire hazard severity zone...that meet best practices for local fire planning." This list was published on the Board’s website on July 1, 2026, and will be updated every two years thereafter. You may view the list and Resolution of Approval here.

How Does the FRRCL Benefit the Community?
The Fire Risk Reduction Community designation brings both safety and financial benefits. It strengthens San Miguel Fire Rescue’s ability to secure state funding for wildfire prevention projects like fuel reduction and community education.

Residents may also be eligible for insurance discounts under California’s “Safer from Wildfires” framework — which mandates insurers recognize the designation (Title 10, Section 2644.9(d)). Contact your insurance provider for further information.

What Can I Do if I Am Not Offered Discounts Based on the FRRCL?
If an insurer is not accepting the Fire Risk Reduction Community List into account and not applying approved discounts, the policyholder should submit a Request for Assistance (RFA) to the Department of Insurance to investigate their specific situation. An RFA may be completed and submitted through the DOI website: https://cdiapps.insurance.ca.gov/CP/login.
